PageSentry can mount and test AppleShare file server volumes through the AppleShare Sentry. To do this, PageSentry will create and write a temporary file into a volume (and folder, if specified). PageSentry will then wait 2 seconds and read the file back in. After checking the contents of the file, PageSentry will delete the temporary file. Any errors that occur during this process will be reported using the selected Notifier(s).

If necessary, PageSentry will automatically mount and unmount the server volume being tested. PageSentry will only mount and unmount the volume if it was not mounted prior to the test. If the volume is mounted when the test begins, PageSentry will leave the volume on the desktop when the test is complete.

Figure 12: Configuring a new AppleShare Sentry.

Figure 12 shows the AppleShare Edit Sentry dialog box. To configure the Sentry, fill in the appropriate fields. In addition to the common configuration options, the AppleShare Sentry has the following options:

Important Note: In order to configure an AppleShare Sentry, a volume of the server being tested must be mounted. To set the volume and folder to test, you will use a standard File Open dialog box, which will only allow you to select actively mounted server volumes. Once configuration is complete, you can unmount the volume as needed, since PageSentry will automatically mount the volume during tests when necessary.

Username and Password
PageSentry will use the username and password supplied here to mount the appropriate AppleShare Volume. The username and password entered here is exactly the same as the name and password you enter when mounting the volume using the Chooser.

Set Volume/Folder
Click on this button to select the AppleShare volume, and within that volume the folder you want PageSentry to use when it performs the test. When the File Open dialog box appears, navigate to the desired folder and click the "Select" button.

Remember that you must select a folder where PageSentry will have both write (Make Changes) and read (See Files) access privileges. As long as PageSentry can read and write files in the folder, the choice of folder has no effect on the PageSentry test. During testing, PageSentry will create a temporary file, so it is best to choose a folder that is not typically open on user's desktops. Also, be sure to choose a folder that won't be renamed, deleted, or moved, since PageSentry will not be able to complete the test and an error notification will be sent.

Volume and Folder
Both Volume and Folder are non-editable fields, but they display the target volume and folder that was selected by clicking the "Set Volume/Folder" button.
